We have obtained the following research results in this project.1.Geometric Registration of Real and Virtual WorldsOne of the most important problems in constructing augmented reality environments is to align the real and virtual coordinate systems. This geometric registration problem, which results in estimating the position and orientation of user's view point in the real world, was first addressed and a number of techniques have been investigated ; for example, (1)Vision-based registration by tracking markers and natural features in user's view, (2)Integration of inertial sensor output with vision-based tracking for robust registration, (3)Position identification using positioning infrastructures such IrDA devices and RFID tags, and (4)Integration of GPS and inertial sensors in outdoor environments.2.Annotation Overlay on Real World ObjectsWe have developed a two-step information presentation scheme for overlaying annotations on real world objects. First object labels are overlaid o … More n objects in user's view, and detailed information is then presented with respect to a certain object on which user's eyes are fixed. Moreover we have developed a networked *ase system for updating annotation information in real-time. The proposed system provides users with annotation information from a server via a wireless network so that users do not need to hold it in their wearable computers and information providers can easily update the database with a web browser. Using this framework, multiple users can send and share location-dependent information in the real world.3.Development of Prototype SystemsA number of prototypes of wearabla augmented reality system have been developed. These systems are implemented as video see-through augmented reality systems, in which annotations are first composed with real world images captured at user's view point and then the composite images are presented to users via a head-mounted display or a small clip-on display attached to glasses. The feasibility of the proposed systems is tested with experiments in indoor and outdoor environments.
