(1)7-Carboxyheptyl radical, pentyl radical, 7-carboxyldihydroxyheptyl radical, 1,5-dihydroxypentyl radical, 8-carboxy-1-hydroxyoctyl radical, 7-carboxy-1-hydroxyheptyl radical, 1-hydroxypentyl radical, and 1-hydroxyhexyl radical were detected and identified in the reaction mixture of oxidized linoleic acid with ferrous ions using HPLC-ESR-MS. (2)7-Carboxyheptyl radical is formed in the reaction mixtures of 13-hydroperoxy-9,11-octadecadienoic acid with several hemoproteins through a mechanism different from the one in the reaction of 13-hydroperoxy-9,11-octadecadienoic acid with ferrous ions. (3)Pentyl radicals were detected and identified in the reaction mixtures of 1,2-dilinoleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphochline (DLPC) with soybean lipoxygenase, oxidized DLPC with ferrous ions, and DLPC hydroperoxide with ferrous ions. (4)A flavone glucoside, luteolin-7-O-glucoside (luteolin-7-G) inhibited the formation of pentyl and 7-carboxyheptyl radicals in the reaction of 13-hydroperoxy-9,11-octadecadienoic acid (13-HPODE) with iron (II) ions. The inhibitory effects of luteolin-7-G occur partly through the chelation of iron ions. (5)The radicals detected in the reaction mixture of ferrous ions with the serums from rats exposed to diethyl ether were identified as 1-ethoxyethyl radicals. (6)Ethyl radicals were detected in the reaction mixture of rat brain homognate with ascorbate/EDTA/ions system. (7)Radicals were detected in rat brain after reperfusion using microdialysis.
