A Comparative Study of Japanese Buddhist-narratives to Indian Counterparts

Given the assistance of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research(C), 4 articles on jataka-narratives of Sanboe (三宝絵), a Japanese literary collection of Buddhist narratives were written during the academic year of 2003 to 2006. In addition, a doctoral thesis, Jataka-setsuwa no Genkei to Tenkai(ジャータカ説話) の原型と展開)was written based on the study above and the preceding study given the assistance of Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B) during the academic year of 2001 to 2002. As a result of this, the degree of Doctor of Hikaku-bunkagaku (比較文化学) was granted by Momoyama Gakuin University (桃 山学院大学, St. Andrew's University) in March 2006. This thesis will be published as a book, Sanboe-honjotan no Genkei to Tenkai(三宝絵本生譚の原型と展開), by Kyuko-shoin(汲古書院), supported by Grant-in-Aid for Publication of Scientific Research Results until the end of February 2008. The main purpose of the book is to know the roots and characteristics of Japanese Sanboe jatakas, very rare cases on the history of Japanese literature, to Indian counterparts in the Sanskrit, the Pali and the Chinese languages.
