The following results were obtained in this research.(1)The resolution of the ISAR (Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) images was estimated through the rotational and translational motion data collected in the Tokyo Bay, on board the training ship Shioji Maru during July, 2004. As result, it was shown that the identification of a ship was possible using the ISAR images. First, was clarified the relationship between the cross-range resolution of the ISAR image and the change of the pitch angle of the vessel. Then, was show that the resolution of ISAR images was 0.5mk〜2.0m.(2)The image of a ship obtained by the marine radar is not necessarily corresponding to its true shape because of multiple reflections and scintillation. Therefore, the estimation of the ship's shape and its aspect from the radar image are difficult at present. In this paper, a method to estimate the ship's shape by means of the integration of the radar images is proposed. According to the proposed method, the aspect angle of the ship can be estimated with 5 degrees error and the length of the ship can be estimated with 40m error.
