A study on safe intramuscular injection skills by evidence-based nursing

Purpose :1. To assess the clinical application of an assessment instrument to measure subcutaneous tissue thickness at the site of intramuscular injection.2. To assess the location of safe sites for intramuscular injectionMethod :Semi-structured interviews and observation of actual intramuscular injections by nurses in hospitals.Obtainment of knowledge from a specialist of anatomy and observation of the site of intramuscular injection.Result and Discussion :We made an assessment instrument to measure subcutaneous tissue thickness from vernier calipers based on the results of our study using regression formulae to assess subcutaneous tissue thickness for intramuscular injection.Measurements obtained from 37 subjects using our assessment instrument were nearly equal to those obtained by ultrasonography.However, errors occurred when using the assessment instrument in the case of fat subjects and depending on how the nurses held the instrument.Nurses reported, "We want to use the assessment instrument because of evidence-based nursing, but it is difficult to know how much pressure to apply."We need to strive for accuracy in assessment of subcutaneous tissue.Nurses need to assess subcutaneous tissue thickness when determining needle length required for intramuscular injection.We need to assess subcutaneous tissue for the development of this toolWe obtained knowledge from a specialist of anatomy and observed veins and nerves at the site of intramuscular injection.
