项目摘要

オセアニア各地の人類集団から古人骨の頭蓋の計測値や生体についての計測値など、各種の人類学的データを大規模に集めて、多変量解析法によって、それら集団間の類縁関係を分析した。用いたデータの内容によって細部では多少は異なるものの、大まかなところでは、オセアニアの人類集団はオーストラリア、ニア・オセアニア、ソモート・オセアニアの3グループに区分できることが判明した。オーストラリアのグループはオーストラリア・アボリジニの諸集団とかつてのタスマニア人を含み、ニア・オセアニアのグループはニューギニアから島嶼メラネシアの民族集団から成るが、これら2グループも、血液型の遺伝子から見るかぎり、モンゴロイド系のグループと考えるのが妥当である。リモート・オセアニアのグループの中では、ポリネシア人は非常に広い分布域にもかかわらず、身体特徴の上からは均質性が強いことから単独の民族と考えるベきで、系譜の上からは、東アジアのモンゴロイド集団につながる。ポリネシア人はホモ・サピエンスの中ではとりわけユニークな体形を有し、その特徴は彼らの過成長に傾く成長パターンに起因することがわかった。さらに、ポリネシア人の過成長の体形のそもそもの原因が、人類の生活環境としては極めて異質な海洋性の島嶼環境への適応過程の中に求められるであろうことを示した。いずれにしても、オセアニアの人類グループはいずれも、オセアニアの特殊な生態条件に規定された生息環境に適応的に育まれた人たちであるために、同じモンゴロイドの仲間でありながら、身体特徴の上では、アジアの大陸部のモンゴロイド諸集団やアメリカ大陸に進出したグループとは大きく異なって今日に至ったようである。この研究で達成した研究成果の一部は、既に学術論文などで発表した。
