项目摘要

1991年7月から10月にかけて、クック諸島のマンガイア島で、考古学、歯科人類学、そして言語学の方法によって総合的な現地調査を実施した。この調査には、日本から合計4名の研究代表者・分担者及び協力者(片山,柴田,山田,五十嵐)を派遣して、島の海岸部にあるワイロロガ遺跡の発掘調査、学童や青年グル-プの歯の萌出年齢の検査、さまざまな言語資料の収集などを行った。ワイロロガ遺跡の発掘では、約30体分の古人骨標本、約500点の各種石器類約100点の貝製品、約10点の骨器類、約8キロの貝穀遺物、約1キロの獣骨および魚骨の遺物、約80点の年代測定用の木炭標本などを採集した。歯科人類学の検査では、約80名の現住者から歯型の石膏模型を採取した。さらに言語学の資料として、マンガイア語とペンリン語に関する25時間分の録音テ-プと約200ペ-ジ分の開き書きテキストを集めた。これら収集資料は日本の関係研究者の研究室等で鋭意分析中である。特に今年度に明らかとなった重要な研究成果としては、1)クック諸島での先史ポリネシア人の居住年代が、これまでに考えられていたよりも千年近くも古く、大略2500年以上も前に遡る可能性が高いこと,2)今年度発掘したワイロロガ遺跡がクック諸島の最初期に相当する大変有望な遺跡であること、3)また同遺跡は埋葬遺跡としては南太平洋でも有数の規模をもつものであること、4)初期のクック諸島人は現在の人々に比べてはるかに漁労民的な性格が強く、魚介類などの動物性の食物に強く依存し真珠貝などを広く交易していたらしいこと、5)ポリネシア人では歯の萌出年齢が早く、成長が早熟に傾いていることなどが挙げられる。10月下旬には関係研究者が集会し、またD.G.サットンを招へいして収集資料の取りまとめ方、今後の研究の進め方,研究成果の公表方法等について協議,打合せをした。

From July to October 1991, a comprehensive field survey of the islands, archaeology, dental anthropology, and linguistics was conducted. A total of 4 research representatives, collaborators and collaborators (Katayama, Shibata, Yamada and Igaran) from Japan and Japan were dispatched to conduct research on the development of cultural relics, research on the emergence of children and youth, and collection of speech data. In late October, the relationship researchers met and agreed to collect data, develop future research methods, and present research results.
