科学技術の進展が、現代経済社会の様々な側面を急ビッチで変革してきている。このような変革は、純粋に科学技術的な関係にもとづく現象と言うよりも、現代企業に対する市場競争によるプレッシャー、政府の規制、国際的な取り決めによる必要性なども関与して生じているものと考えられる。現代企業による、変化する環境要因を総合的に判断したえでの技術開発への取り組みを戦略的技術開発マネジメントと呼ぶことにすれば、本研究は、現代企業のこのような戦略的技術開発マネジメントの展開に見られる戦略的対応の論理の解明と対応様式の整理を試みたものである。分析に当たっては、製造業企業204社から得られたアンケート回答データと、現代の科学技術の推進のもう一つの担い手である国立研究機関から得られたアンケート回答データを用いた。現代企業の戦略的対応行動を解明するに当たっては、二つの要因に特に注目した。一つは、研究開発の類型である。ある企業は、科学研究の成果を直接適用して製品開発するような科学技術依存型の技術開発を行うが、別のタイプの企業は部品や素材の供給業者を活用しながら、供給業者活用型の製品開発を行う。その際、素材開発をめざすか、システム開発をめざすかという面でのパターンの分化も見られる。このような研究開発の類型によって、戦略的技術開発活動の内容と形式は異なったものとなってくることを明らかにした。また、企業の直面する市場競争の性質を、競争において最も重要な要因(戦略的競争要因)によって表現することにした。たとえば、コストダウン、品質改良、新製品開発などが戦略的競争要因の例であるが、このような戦略的競争要因の差異によっても戦略的技術開発活動の内容と形式が異なったものになりうるのであり、戦略的技術開発マネジメントのあり方に対する効果の大きさの点からいうと、この面の影響の方が大きいことを明らかにした。
