今回はjoint attention行動の中で、大人の指差しの理解を取り上げて検討した。従来の自閉症児の指差し理解の研究は、指差しの対象指示機能の理解に焦点を当てていたが、今回はjoint attention行動の一つとして、他者が対象に対する注意・興味を共有しようと意図していることをどう理解しているか(他者概念の成立)にも焦点を当てて課題設定と分析を行なった。具体的には、自閉症児が対象そのものに興味を向けやすいものとしてシャボン玉を設定した。そしてシャボン玉を吹いて飛ばしそれを追視する行動が見られた所で、テスターが後方の指差し(指と対象が同一視野内に入らない)を行ない、その時の反応を、(1)指差した方向を見るかどうか、(2)その後テスターにどういう反応を行なうか、を中心に分析した。健常児5〜18ヵ月児での結果は、後方の指差しに対し後方を振り返って見る反応が12ヵ月以降で増大すること、そしてその時期に同時に対象共有伝達行動(対象を自分でも指差しながらテスターを振り返る・「ア、ア」と発声を出しながらテスターを振り返る等)が12ヵ月以降の半数以上の被験者において見られることが明らかになった。つまり健常児は、12ヵ月以降、指差しに見られる対象指示機能と他者概念の成立が同時期に見られることが示された。これに対して自閉症児は、被験者の約7割が対象指示機能の理解として、後方を振り返って見る反応は示しながらも、対象共有伝達行動を行なった者は1名しかおらず、他者概念の成立は見られにくいことが明らかになった。
