企業が情報化をどのように推進してきたかを調査してきた。中小企業の情報化、大企業の情報化、そして企業間関係にたいする情報化の影響を、生産、流通、事務など多角的に調査してきた。消費者需要の多様化や技術革新サイクルの早まりによって、多品種化や短サイクル化に企業は対応しなければならなくなっている。一部の先進的な企業、特に流通産業における企業は情報化を利用して、従来の産業構造や市場構造を変革しつつある。また、企業内部の組織や管理の形態も変化ししつつあるようにみえる。小規模な企業でも情報化の活用が必要であると認識している。とくに、輸入品との競争において、あるいは人材不足への対応に不可欠であると考えている。しかし情報化はコストをともなう。それは情報機器の購入費用だけではなく、人材の教育、業務内容の変更や再配置にともなうコストが重要である。情報化の進展は規模や業種というよりも企業毎のばらつきが大きい。流通業については、POSの利用を核とした情報化のパターンが定着してきた。製造業については、SISやCIMの導入が叫ばれているが、各企業が実情に合わせて手探りの状態で進めているようである。企業間関係の情報化もEDIが十分整備されていない業界もあり、進んでいる企業とそうでない企業との間に大きな格差がみられる。情報化機器というハードを導入しても、それが効果を発揮するとはかぎらない。手順、通信やEDIの標準化、また利用の仕方などソフト開発が重要である。また、企業内の業務内容の変更や従業員の移動をともなうかもしれない。従業員を情報化のユーザーとして教育するとともに、責任と権限を与えることも必要である。現在情報化に成功している企業は以前から業務分担や組織形成にかんして情報化を受け入れやすいシステムが存在していた。
