(1)Reconstructed two-dimensional(2D) slices, which were generated by the Tuned-Aperture Computed Tomography(TACT) algorithm, an interactive, low-dose, low-cost, three-dimensional tomo-synthesis system, were applied for three-dimensional dento-alveolar imaging. The diagnostic task we examined was the assessment of impacted maxillary teeth. 2D slices and pseudo-holograms were found to significantly improved depiction of the buccal/palatal position of the impacted tooth. TACT was perceived to improve depiction of the buccal/palatal position of the impacted tooth and its relationship with adjacent teeth (p<.0001). TACT outperformed conventional images in terms of both subjective assessments for clinical decision making.(2)Further we evaluated the comparative diagnostic value of tomo-synthesis, pseudo-hologram and 3D(three-dimensional)-CT images. Pseudo-holograms as well as 2D slices generated by TACT. Reconstructed 3D-images of multi-detector row CT are comparatively evaluated as the depth … More discrimination and the diagnostic utility for the localization of impacted tooth and surrounding anatomic details. 2D slices and pseudo- holograms were found to significantly improved depiction of the buccal/palatal position. In cases of horizontal impaction, pseudo-holograms as well as 3D-CT were preferred to 2D slices. TACT occasionally altered treatment option selection.(3)Furthermore, glasses-free stereoscopic liquid-crystal display was applied to displaying dento-alveolar images. Due to the progress of 3D-viewing technology of the flat TFT display, the glasses-free stereoscopic display is available. Therefore, we examined to use a 3D-viewing display without eye-glasses to improve the recognition of 3D anatomical structure. 3D data set was easily modified by the provided software for the specific 3D-viewing system. The creation of contents for 3D-viewing is almost automatically performed. The spatial perception utilizing virtual cursor was depended on the number of views. The depth perception toward dento-alveolar structures somewhat improved by the stereoscopic view nevertheless observers were less attuned to the 3D-viewing display. Less
