Armed Forces and Local Community Interaction in Postwar Japan-Higashifuji, Hamamatsu, Okinawa

In this project, I selected three areas, the HIGASHUFUJI base, the HAMAMATSU base and the OKINAWA bases, for my research on the documents. As for HIGASHIFUJI, I gave my priority to the searching task of the local newspaper of "GAKUROKU" and finished the searching task of articles related to HIGASHIFUJI between 1955 to 82, however the article list has not been created. As for HAMAMATSU, I managed to get the annual report "Annual Report of Measures for the Base" published by the negotiation organization of the Hamamtsu city. As a result, it became possible to examine the targets of the measures for the base and the transformation process of these measures. I got also the material of the pro-peace movement organization in Hamamatsu", the association for NO AWACS" and have checked the articles in the news paper, "SHIZUOKA SHINBUN" since 1993. Both for HIGASHIFUJI and HAMAMATSU, I could checked the documents of the SHIZUOKA committee for the peace, "SHIZUOKA HEIWA IINKAI". This committee has checked the activities of various kinds of the bases. Consequently, that material which I get is so important for the studies on the history of the bases in Shizuoka prefecture.As for the bases in Okinawa, I examined the article of "RYUKYU SHINPO" in the 1959s and recent articles of "OKINAWA TIMES, and conducted the document research related to the period occupied the US Army, in the prefectural archives of OKINAWA.Finally, I should analyze the materials in details which I got in the following year. In the report for this project, I discussed the relationships between the HAMAMATSU base and the local people and changing relationships between the base and the local people after the deployment of AWACS, using the materials, as mentioned above. Reports on the bases of OKINAWA and HIGAHSIFUJI will be published this year and the next year respectively.
