<Purpose>This study was conducted in order to clarify maternal identities and feelings toward her baby and explore possible assistance methods for a midwife to promote maternal identities and feelings toward her baby.<Survey Methods>1.Subjects : Seven primipara and multipara who were receiving care at the obstetric department of a general hospital and gave a consent form to participate in the study. 2.Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 subjects 5 times for each in the following periods : (1)up to the 15th, (2)16th to 22nd, (3)24th to 28th, (4)32nd to 35th, (5)one week after delivery. The responses were analyzed based on the content analysis, developed by Berelson, B. Three midwife researchers confirmed the results categorized by main researcher later on. 3.Questions were focused on various feelings of expectant mothers over the pregnancy ; anxieties or worries, emotional feelings toward her baby as well as toward family members in terms of support and encouragement.<Results and Discussion>From this study the following were confirmed to promote factors maternal identities and feelings toward her baby ; relationship between husband and wife, and supports from husband and people around her. Based on our findings, a midwife could be provide continual interview/training sessions for expectant mothers, which can be relaxation time as well as intellectual growth as a new mother through casual talk with a professional midwife.
