本研究は、南極氷海域における雲と海氷の分布、その状態を衛星デ-タから正確に導出する方法を確立することを目的としている。海氷は太陽からの日射をはね返し、また海と大気との間の熱や水蒸気の輸送を遮断するものとして気候に重要な役割を果たしている。一方、海氷域の上は雲で覆われていることが多く、海氷の存在が雲を発達させると共に、また雲の存在が、海氷の消長に影響していると考えられ、その相互作用が注目されている。このように、海氷と雲の分布、その状態を正確に把握することは気候研究の上で重要なテ-マであるが、広域把握に力ある衛星デ-タから両者を正確に識別する方法は未だ確立されていない。本研究では、この第一歩として、南極昭和基地で行っている地上観測、主にマイクロ波および垂直レ-ダの観測結果の解析、そして新しク大型のアンテナが設置されたことにより入手されたMOS-1のマイクロ波デ-タの解析を始めた。地上観測の37GHgのマイクロ波放射からは、高層ゾンデによる水蒸気観測で補正しつつ木水量を求めた。レ-ダの反射強度からは、経験式にもとづき氷水量(固体凝結水量)を求めた。これら地上観測からは、大気中の水の3態である水蒸気、雲水、氷水量が求められ、今後衛星観測の地上検証値として使い得る見通しを得た。初めて南極で受信されたMOS-1のMSR(マイクロ波23.8および31.4GHz)デ-タから、簡単な理論的関係式より水蒸気量、雲水量を評価した。23.8GHzチャンネルについて、10k前後のバイアス誤差を考慮すれば、海上(海氷の無い)では水蒸気0.6〜1.2g/cm^2、雲水0〜14mg/cm^2という妥当な結果が得られた。今後、地上観測との比較検証を進めなければならないが、昭和基地は大陸沿域にあるため、アンテナサイドロ-ブの影響をいかに押えられるかが、課題である。
