研究目的は新メソドロジイ(研究方法論)の構築にある。時間的・空間的に成立過程が異なる文明の比較研究には鋭い視角と精緻な研究方法論が組み立てられなければならない。つまり、類似同質性および異質特殊性を看破し、その成立過程の検証と同質・異質の内的構成要素の精査が伴わなければならない。さらに時間・空間的吟味に加えて、それを立脚・形成・成立させた基盤(文化環境と自然環境)を考察した。新方法論を組み立てるために、史料・資料の比較検討などを中心にしながら両文明の類似同質性と異質特殊性を各専門分野から比較検討事項を提起した。第1は、文化環境と自然環境の枠組みから検討をはじめ、特に気象変動と両文明の成立の関係を概略的に討論し、文明の成立条件を文化と自然の両環境から考察した。特に劣悪な衛生環境とこれの対処技術など、居住地のひろがりと人口問題などのかかわりをとりあげて検討した。そのために机上シュミレイション作業と同時に日本国内の類似地形検証の調査研究が必要であった。第2は、両文明の基盤である農業問題を検討した。特に農耕地の自然環境条件、特に「水」の問題をめぐって土地利用と食糧生産問題とのかかわりを考察し、河川・地下水問題貯水池の問題も重要であった。同じく地図上にこの問題をおとし、自然環境と農作業カレンダ-も検討し、現在の両地域の生活も併せて調査報告した。このために20種のランドサット写真図・地形図が必要となり専門的解析研究も併せて行なった。第3は視聴覚資料・スライド等により、現勢地形・および土地利用図などを入手し、集中討論を行ない、両文明の類似点と相違点と相違点を明らかにする作業を進め、両地域にまたがる基本的事項の解明に全力を尽すと同時に、各自の専門分野におとして研究報告を組み立てた。
