项目摘要

本研究では、とくに東南アジア諸地域との比較を念頭において、申請者らが長年調査に携わってきたアフリカ諸地域の生態史の比較検討を進めた。アフリカ地域の代表的な景観を、(1)砂漠周縁部(サヘル地域)、(2)熱帯雨林(コンゴ盆地)、(3)サバンナ(東南部部アフリカ)、(4)ミホンボ疎開林(中南部アフリカ)に大別し、各々の地域における特徴的な歴史的事象を選んでそれらを生態史、すなわち自然と人間の相互作用の歴史という観点から検討した。まず、サヘル地域に関しては、この地域の歴史地域構造を分析したのち、この地域がアフロ・ユーラシアの内陸部乾燥帯を貫く世界的な交易網の一端に位置することを示し、西欧による近代世界システムの形成以前から存在していたこのような世界的なネットワークの意義について検討した。次に、森林が卓越するコンゴ川流域においては、短期間のうちにこの地域一帯に分布を広げたバントゥー系農耕民の初期の移動について検討した上で、流動的で分散的な小集団が林立する彼らの世界が内陸部アフリカ社会の原像であることを示した。また、この地域における近い過去の生態史を、地上でのミクロな人間活動と衛星からみたマクロな画像データを結合することによって復元することを試みた。さらに、中南部アフリカ一帯に広がるミオンボ・ウッドランドについては、この地域の生態史を理解する鍵となる農業生産力を評価するための土地分級をおこなったほか、彼らの移動焼畑が原生的な植生に与えた影響について、とくに衛星画像を使って解析した。最後に、東南部アフリカのサバンナについては、この地域に特徴的な牧畜文化の形成と民族間関係及びエスノ・ヒストリーについての検討をおこなった。
