沖縄県は、他地域に比べて相対的に古文書が少ない。もっとも壊滅的な打撃を受けたのは沖縄戦での被害であった。こうした状況のなかで、沖縄県教育委員会では、昭和48年以来種々の古文書調査を行ない、その成果を目録として刊行してきた。しかし、それは全琉・各地域をカバーするには至っていない。一方、各市町村史編集室が、それぞれの地域で戦火をくぐりぬけてきた史資料、特に地方(じかた)文書の発掘に力を注いできたが、それらの史資料は、全体としてまだ情報化されていない。そのため、本研究の目的を、(1)沖縄の地方(じかた)史料の残存状況を調査し、新しい地方史料の発掘、刊行資料および末刊情報を含めて確認し、所在目録データベースを構築すること、(2)地方史料のマイクロ映像データベースの基本資料を作成すること、(3)既刊資料を中心に地方史料のテキストファイルを作成すること、(4)以上をもとに沖縄における地方史料データベースの基盤をつくること、に設定した。その目的を達成するために、沖縄県地域史協議会と密接な連絡をとりつつ調査研究を進めてきた。平成8年度は、八重山・石垣市を中心に、沖縄本島北部の国頭村・名護市および久米島について重点的に調査を進めた。今年度の成果は、「沖縄県地方史料目録データベース」に約3000点入力した。具体的には、(1)石垣市(1363点)、(2)竹富町(391点)、(3)平良市(35点)、(4)久米島(150点)、(5)名護市(581点)、(6)国頭村(280点)などである。最終年度の平成9年度は、本年度に引き続き調査研究を展開する。調査地域は、全琉各市町村の確認調査を行なうほか、重点地域として八重山地域の補足調査をはじめ、宮古地域、沖縄本島北部・南部地域、久米島その他の離島を設定する。新たな地方史料情報により「沖縄県地方史料目録データベース」をより豊かにするとともに、史料の写真撮影を進め、テキストファイルの作成に着手する。
