本研究の目的は、琉球・沖縄の歴史、とりわけ王府支配下の村々、さらには家の問題、人々の生活実態の理解を深め、沖縄の地域の歴史像を豊かにすることにある。その基礎作業として、平成8〜9年度において、沖縄の市町村・字・家レベルで地方(じかた)史料の残存状況を調査し、沖縄における地方史料の所在目録データベースの基盤をつくることを課題とした。まず、市町村史や各種史料調査報告書などの刊行資料から情報を収集整理し、また各市町村史編集室や博物館等で収集されている未刊情報についても調査を行なった。第2は、可能な限り新しい地方史料を発掘し情報化した。第3に、史料の保存と公開利用に向けて、主な地方史料のマイクロ撮影を行なった。なお、既刊資料を中心にした地方史料のテキストファイル作成は今後の課題とした。「沖縄県地方史料目録データベース」作成は、「史料カード」(24項目)をもとに可能な限り原史料に当たって情報を整理した。入力作業は、本プロジェクトのシステムに合わせて「桐」ソフトで行なった。整理・入力した各地域の主な史料群は次のとおりである。八重山の石垣市については計1809点を整理した。内訳は、石垣市立八重山博物館史料124点、石垣市管内明治35年調整図面及び石垣町・大浜村時代調整図面史料438点、石垣豊川家文書642点、石垣喜舎場英勝家文書242点、石垣石垣家文書363点である。竹富町は、竹富島喜宝院蒐集館文書391点を入力した。宮古の平良市については、宮古本永家文書35点のほか、平良市史編集室収集史料約50点を入力した。多良間村は村史に収録された537点を入力した。久米島については、新たに久米島与世永家文書396点を整理・入力した。沖縄本島北部は、名護市について583点、本部町444点、今帰仁村250点、国頭村奥区350点のほか、大宜味村・東村・伊是名村について既刊情報を整理した。沖縄本島中部は、宜野湾市17点、北谷町15点、西原町9点を入力した。以上、「沖縄県地方史料目録データベース」として約5000点を整理・入力した。
