项目摘要

北関東の前方後円墳(昨年度)のみの分析に加え、本年度は関東全域に分析対象を広げた。主軸長70m以上で、各部計測値の判明する前方後円墳を『集成』で捜すと、85例拾い上げられた。そこで、これらのデータベースを作成・分析し、9月の日本情報考古学会の大会で発表した。ところが、あとから気づいたのだが、これらの中には各部計測値は提示されているが、実測図を注意してみると、墳丘がかなり崩れていて、当該研究の分析には無理というものがいくつか含まれていた。そのため、それらを棄却したところ、79例となり、これらをもとに分析をすべてやり直した。なお、基壇付きの古墳は、上壇のマウンドのデータを使用した。クラスター分析を行うと、ひとつの隔離値を除き、大きく3つのグループに分かれた。グループI(23例)は、4〜6世紀の古墳が混在していたが、グループII(44例)は、4例のみを例外に、5世紀半ばから6世紀という古墳時代でも後半に築造されたもので、グループIII(11例)は、例外ひとつを除き、すべて6世紀という新しいものであった。最近似ペアを県別にみてみると、千葉県の古墳と他県の古墳がペアを組む例が、それ以外の組み合わせよりはるかに多いことも判明した。数量化III類分析から判明したことは、明瞭ではなかったが、北関東の古墳は南関東の古墳に比べ、くびれ部が太い例が多く、逆にくびれ部や前方部の高い例が少ないという点であった。同分析法で古墳の築造時期を経時的にみると、4世紀の古墳は数は少ないがいろいろなタイプの古墳があったが、5世紀は、くびれ部の太い例とか、前方部の広い古墳が多くなった。6世紀の古墳は、前方部が広く、くびれ部や前方部が高い古墳の数が増加していることが判明した。次に、前方後円墳(4〜6世紀)と古代道・国府(8世紀)との空間上における関連をみた。8つある国府のうち、北関東にある3つの国府は、周囲に前方後円墳が多くある。南関東の5つは、ひとつを除いて付近に少なくとも主軸長70m以上の前方後円墳は無い。もっとも、東京近辺は、あったとしても破壊されている可能性も高いはずである。前方後円墳と古代道・国府との関連は、各研究者の頭の中で漠然と比較されていたが、今回のわれわれの分析のように、ある一定の基準のもとに、システマティックに比較されたのは初めてのことであろう。それを、統計解析の結果を利用しながら比較検討したのも、初めてのことである。
