シンガポール華僑・華人の歴史や東南アジアの国際関係を踏まえながら、独立シンガポール政府の国民統合政策の変容と、華僑、華人のナショナリズムを明らかにすることを目的とした。成果は以下の2点である。(1)アジア各地からの雑多な移民によって成立したシンガポールで「国家意識」が芽生えたのは、1946年のマラヤ連合成立時である。シンガポールがマラヤから切り離されて単独の英直轄植民地となったことは、移民に自分たちとシンガポールの未来を否応なく重ね合わせて考えさせた。だが、中国からの移民の帰属意識は様々に分化しており、祖国中国を志向するものと、現地を志向するものに大別できるものの、後者は、共産主義系グループ、英連邦内で自治・独立を志向するグループなどに分かれ、さらに英語教育と受けたものと華語教育を受けたものとの対立も絡んで、自治・独立をどのように達成するかについて様々な展望が存在していた。50年代に入って明らかになった自治の展望のなかで、英語派と華語派の対立は南洋大学をめぐって先鋭化した。これらの対立と、その後の英語派の勝利の過程を検証した。(2)英語派が政権を握ったシンガポールは独立後、英語国家に誘導されていくのだが、80年代に入ると再び、華語・中国文化を志向するようになった。とりわけ、最も失われれた儒教的価値観を見直してそれらを国民統合のイデオロギー的紐帯にする試みがなされるようになった。「華人は華語を話そうキャンペーン」に始まり、宗教知識教育の導入から廃止への試行錯誤を経て、91年の「国民共有価値白書」が生まれる過程とその成果、問題点を検証した。
