本研究においては,北宋末ころ(12世紀はじめ)に,首都汳京の市中において販売されていたことが明らかにされている,馬に騎した神仏像などを木版で印刷した.護符の一種である紙馬が,一般庶民に広く使用され,また漢民族だけではなく少数民族の間にも伝えられたものの,知識人たちからはほとんどその存在を無視され,その後社会主義政権成立の後には,打破すべき迷信のひとつとして弾圧され,姿を消したと思われていたが,雲南省をはじめとする北京から遠く離れた辺境地帯においては,少数民族政策との微妙な関係もあって,何とか生きのびて京に至り,最近の改革開放経済のもとでは,むしろ昔日の勢いを取りもどすかのように,自由市場等に出まわって公然と販売されている現状を確認した.そして紙馬の意味について再検討するとともに,その歴史と発展についても考察をくわえ,中国における印刷術の発達,道教の護符の伝統,仏教の印仏の風習など,さまざまな分野からの影響を受けて,唐代なかば頃には,印刷された紙馬が四川など当時印刷・出版が盛んであった一部の地域において出現していた可能性がきわめてたかいことを論じた.しかしながら,紙馬のほとんどは儀礼の際の焼却される場合が多く暦や書籍などとは違って,年号や印刷・出版者などの刊記が明記されたものが存在する訳ではなく,資料となり得る古い紙馬は全く残っていないので,決定的な物証があるとは言えず,その意味で今後の中国印刷史研究の進展が期待される.
