World Wide Web上の情報を組織化して百科事典のように利用するために,研究代表者は検索サイト「Cyclone」を構築した.ユーザは,キーワード入力,質問文入力,可視化インタフェースなどによって,約70万語を収録したコンテンツから,言葉や事柄に関する説明テキストを効率よく検索することができる.本研究は,Cycloneの事典コンテンツを状況に応じた形式に変換するための諸研究を行った.具体的には,以下に示す点について研究を行った.複数文書要約Cycloneでは一つの見出し語に関して複数の説明文章が検索される.しかし,これらは別々のページ作成者によって記述されているため,互いに関連がなく,冗長性を含む.そこで,一つの見出し語に関する複数の説明文章を要約することで,携帯端末のように一度に表示できる文字数に制限がある利用環境でも,必要な情報を過不足なく入手することを可能にする.誘導型検索事典的な調べ物とは,広く捉えれば,Cycloneで提供されるような説明的な文章の検索だけではない.ある事柄(人物,会社,商品,イベントなど)に関するトップページや代表的なページに誘導することも必要である.ある事柄のトップページが分かれば,そのページを読むことで事典的な調べ物を効率よく行うことができる.個人化検索現在のCycloneでは同じ検索質問には常に同じ結果が返される.しかし.同じ検索質問であっても,ユーザの興味や専門性に応じて,提供する情報を臨機応変に変更することが好ましい.そこで,検索結果の個人化(personalization)について研究を行った.
