複合ドキュメントを実現するミドルウェア及びフレームワークを設計・実装した。これはテキストや画像、音声などの多様なコンポーネントから文書を構成・表示可能にするとともに、モバイルエージェントのコンピュータ間移動性により、文書内容に応じてネットワーク上で自律移動・配布可能な動的文書データを実現するものであり、複雑なドキュメントは多様なコンポーネントを組み合わせることで実現される。具体的には、(1)複合ドキュメントの基礎となるコンポーネント設計した。従来のコンポーネント技術と根本的に相違するのはコンポーネント内部にコンテンツを格納したデータだけでなく、そのコンテンツを表示や編集するためのプログラムコードも内蔵されていることである。(2)この結果、コンポーネント自身がコンテンツのアクセス権を細かく制御できるようになる。また、モバイルエージェント技術を導入することにより、コンポーネントはそれ自身の配信先コンピュータや複製を制御できることから、従来にはないコンテンツ保護を実現するものとなる。(3)また、コンポーネントはその編集機能を保持しながら、他のコンポーネントを他のコンピュータに転送することができる。この結果、コンポーネントの組み合わせにより分散処理が実現でき、その処理の定義方法も複合ドキュメントの編集方法を利用することができることから、エンドユーザによる分散処理を実現するという点でも先駆けとなった。
