本研究では、マントル下降流の振る舞いが、全マントル規模の熱輸送過程、地球熱進化過程に与える影響、及び沈み込み帯における火成活動、熱輸送や物質循環(特に水分布)に与える影響を、数値シミュレーションによって明らかにした。プレート沈み込みに伴って大量の水が遷移層まで取り込まれることが示されたこと、及び3次元球殻マントルのシミュレーションによって遷移層付近に横たわるスラブが再現できたことは、特に重要な成果である。
