ブータンでは現地研究機関との共同研究なくして大型研究の実施は困難である。本研究課題の目的は、王立ブータン大学や王立ブータン研究所と共同で、ブータン及び周辺諸国に関する文献調査とフィールド調査を実施し、ブータン仏教の少数宗派の歴史と現状、更にはその普遍的価値を解明し将来的展望を提示することである。「国民総幸福度(GNH: Gross National Happiness)」を掲げる幸福立国として世界的注目を集めるブータンは、チベット仏教系のドゥク派とニンマ派が大多数を占める仏教国である。過去には他宗派も存在したが、長い歴史の中で淘汰され、現在では殆どその姿を見ない。「多様性・寛容性を強調するブータンに何故２つの仏教宗派しか残らなかったのか」、「少数宗派は如何なる扱いを受けてきたのか」という問いは、同国が掲げる「多様性・寛容性」の真価を見極める上で必要不可欠である。本課題では、ブータン仏教に多様性・寛容性という普遍的価値が見出せるか検証すべく、同国の少数宗派の歴史と現状を、文献及びフィールド調査によって解明する。初年度となる2022年度には、西ブータンに存在するサキャ派寺院を現地訪問し予備調査を実施した。また、王立ブータン大学の共同研究者テンジン・ドルジ講師、並びに、王立ブータン研究所の共同研究者カルマ・ウラ所長と、オンラインおよび対面で面会し、情報共有とディスカッションを行い、共同研究を加速させた。また、王立ブータン大学のフランソワーズ・ポマレ教授とは、欧文書籍出版に向けた議論を実施した。
