社会林業政策による熱帯保護林内の開発・プランテーション化が，流域内の炭素流亡量に与える影響については研究例が少ない．この政策は“地元農民の生活基盤の安定化と環境保全との両立”を目標に東南アジアで拡大している．しかし実際は保護林内での不適切な営農が圃場斜面からの土壌流亡を加速させ，炭素の域内貯留能を低下させることで，水環境悪化やCO2放出を引き起こし，生態系に負の影響を与えていると考えられる．本研究は，現地観測によってその実態を解明すると共に，現地農民の斜面保全対策評価と未利用農業廃棄物の活用を通した保全対策の提案を行うことを目標にしている．これにより熱帯林流域の水環境保全と営農利用とを両立させる持続的な流域管理の実質化を進めたいと考えている．令和4年度はインドネシア・ランプン大学の研究者とのオンラインミーティングを通して研究計画のすり合わせを進めるとともに，主として，流域水環境を把握するため，流域内にある2つの河川（セカンプン川，サンハルス川）末端において河川水のサンプリングを開始した．なお，日本人研究者が頻繁に現地に赴くことは難しいため，定期的な河川水のサンプリングとそれらの保存はランプン大学の研究者に依頼し，共同で研究を実施している．
