The Institute for Production Technology and Forming Machines (PtU) at the TU Darmstadt has been operating a high-speed press on loan in its own test stand for several years. With the associated possibilities of realising various high-speed forming processes, a large number of research projects have been successfully applied and carried out in recent years. In addition to conventional stamping processes, multi-stage processes for electromobility and medical technology are now being researched. With the rapidly growing number of research projects requiring the operation of the high-speed press, the equipment to accompany the experiments has also been expanded. Thus, the PtU has a wide range of tools, measuring technology and equipment at its disposal, with the help of which various processes are operated and tools for data acquisition and analysis are developed. The knowledge gained in recent years has been published in internationally recognised journals and is now incorporated into the institute's teaching activities. The increasing press utilisation poses a great challenge to the Institute, especially at times when the loaner equipment is not available. At the moment, the press is needed in seven research projects and is operated on a scheduled 210 working days per year. Further research projects are in the application stage and some have already been approved. For this reason, the PtU is submitting a DFG Großgeräteantrag proposal that provides for 50 per cent partial funding of a high-speed press. The Institute expects this to secure promising and heterogeneous research activities as well as a significant deepening and expansion of the scientific knowledge already gained. Infrastructural changes are not required for the press procurement. The other half of the partial financing is already secured from internal university funds.
