本研究の実施にあたっては、当初の目標としてまず第一に、マルチモード・データを扱う手法の歴史的経緯とその社会科学的適用の形態等について、文献研究を中心とした思想的背景と社会的文脈を明らかにすることをおいた。分析軸としてはメディアの社会史的研究、メディア・コミュニケーションに関する内容分析的研究の流れ、メディアの思想史的研究などを追うことが中心となったが、研究対象がきわめて多面的かつ広い領域とならざるをえないため、文献資料の収集およびその検討には困難をきわめた。これと平行して進めたのが第二の柱としての実証的データの収集をもとにしたパイロット的研究である。このなかでは、「携帯メディアの使用に関する実証的研究」というモデルケースを設定、東京と大阪の二か所でビデオカメラを用いた街頭での聞き取り調査をおこない、一連のプロセスをデジタルビデオに収録、マルチメディア・オーサリングのソフトウェアを使ってデータベース化を試みた。また、この結果としてできあがったマルチメディアタイトルの評価を複数の研究者に依頼し、電子メール上で議論をおこなった。その結果としては、通常の質問紙調査に比べ、調査の現場に立ち会わないデータ利用者にも調査がおこなわれた文脈を容易に把握しやすいという大きな利点があることなどがわかった。さらに、当初の調査に意図されない周辺的情報を提示できることで、質的データとしての分析の可能性を拡大することも確認された。しかしながら、データが冗長であることによる曖昧さも当然ながら残るため、分析結果の反復性などの点において問題が生じる。以上の状況を鑑みても、従来の質的データ利用の場合と同様な種類の問題は残されたままであり、また最終的な研究結果の発表形態など、こうした多様なデータを扱う手法を一貫して確立する上では、検討されるべき余地はまだまだ多いと思われる。
