本研究は地域文化とボランティア意識の関連について実証的に分析・考察するための基礎研究である。研究過程の概要は次の通りである。(1)既存の社会学理論の検討を通して大枠の仮説を設定し、(2)ボランティア活動の活発な地域を選定しその仮説に従って調査を行った。既存の理論研究は主にイタリアの社会学者アルベルト=メルッチの集合行為概念を検討した。調査対象地域は島根県邑智郡瑞穂町である。この町は従来から社会福祉協議会の活動を中心に地域住民によるボランティア活動が盛んである。調査は主に社協関係者およびボランティア団体の構成員に対するインタビュー形式で行った。ここで使用する地域文化概念は地域住民に共通する意識形態と行動様式の複合体と定義される。ボランティア意識とはボランティア活動を直接導く理念を含んだ意識のことである。インタビューによる調査は主に次の点に留意して行った。すなわち、地縁による相互扶助意識、互助活動はボランティア意識、活動を導くための主要因になるのか、ということである。この調査の結果主に以下の二点が確認された。(1)相互扶助意識・互助行動は一定地域(主に部落単位)に限定され、直接町全体に対する意識・行動にはつながらない。(2)ボランティア意識はボランティア団体に加入した後活動を経験する過程で形成されることが多い。(2)の結果は、集合行為と集合行為者の関連についてメルッチが指摘したこととおおよそ一致する。今後の研究課題はこの調査で得られた結果に基づいて作業仮説を立て詳細に検証していくことにある。
