本研究の目的は、児童虐待が公になりにくい原因の一つである、「子供をどう扱うかは家庭の問題で、公にすべきでない」という人びとの認知構造の解析である。特に、児童虐待が潜在化する問題の背後にある、保護者の子供に対する権利意識の認知的および感情的構造に焦点を当てた。次に人々の児童虐待に対する認知構造を分析するために、調査を行った。サンプルは、大阪市と高松市の各市51人の満20歳以上の男女個人である。調査手法は、面接調査である。サンプル数が小さいので、各年代の人を代表するように市街でランダムに人を選択した。調査の質問内容は、家族関係に関する質問、児童虐待の状況別の対処に仕方に関する質問、児童虐待の知識に関する質問、政治的態度、近所との交流度、PTA活動への参加度、デモグラフィック要因等である。詳しい質問内容を説明する。まず家族関係に関する質問として、自分がどのような家族を理想としているか、実際の自分の家族とどのように異なるか、子供の有無、子育てのときに参照した本や、子育てについて相談した人の有無等である。次に、児童虐待に関する質問をおこなった。児童虐待に対する認識は状況によって異なってくると思われる。そこで児童虐待のケースとして、状況の深刻度が異なるケースを用意した。さらに各状況において、子どもが「何でもない」といった場合とその親が「何でもない」といった異なる条件を用意した。以上の質問結果の分析から、児童虐待など家族問題を公にすることをためらわせる阻害要因を探った。その結果、「子供をどう扱うかは家族の問題で、公にすべきでない」という家族のウチ・ソトの区別に関する認識と、家族観の間に密接な関係がみられた。
