為替レートのヒストリカルデータを用いて、VAR(Value at Risk)の有効性を検討した。具体的には円・ドル、ドル・マルク、ドル・スイスフラン、ドル・フランスフラン、ドル・ボンドの5つの通貨のヒストリカルの日次データ(約5000)を用いて、時系列分析の手法を用いて、ヒストリカル・ボラティリティの計測を行った。1.通常のヒストリカル・ボラティリティの計測結果とランダムウォーク・モデルによるボラティリティの計測結果の比較を行うとともに、後者のモデルの適用可能性を検討した。2.ランダムウォーク・モデルにおける分散不均一性のテストを行い、ARCH効果の測定を実施し、同効果が当該5通貨すべてで認められることが明らかとなった。3.ARCHタイプのモデル(ARCH、GARCH、GRCH-M)によりヒストリカル・ボラティリティを計測し、ヒストリカル・データの標本分散を基にしたヒストリカル・ボラティリティと比較し、相互の相違を検討した。4.結果として、時系列モデルでボラティリティを計測する場合には、ARCHタイプのモデルを用いることが必要であることが示された。また、10日間のボラティリティを計測する場合、推計された日次のボラティリティを10^∧(1/2)するよりも、10日間のボラティリティを一つのデータとしてボラティリティを推計した値の方が小さくなる傾向が示された。
