ラフ集合論にもとづく情報検索のモデルに関しては,先行研究が少ないため,基礎的な段階から方法論を考察していく必要があった.そこで,基本的なラフ情報検索モデルを開発し,ファジィ情報検索モデルとの関連を明らかにした.この際,メンバーシップ列の概念の重要性に考え至ったことから,ファジィマルチ集合との関連性の考察の必要性が生じてきた.このように,ラフ集合と情報検索を考究するに従って,マルチ集合の理論を確立させる必要が生じたため,マルチ集合とファジィマルチ集合の理論的基礎を確立し,ラフ情報検索との関連を論じた.とくに,関数と集合が与えられたとき,通常の集合の像ではなく,マルチ集合としての像を生じる写像を新規に提案した.この写像は,マルチ集合がどのようにして現れてくるかを示し,かつ,情報処理における単純な逐次処理とマルチ集合とが深くかかわっていることを明らかにしている.この写像の理論的な諸性質を証明すると同時に,応用として新しいラフ近似およびデータベースの問い合わせ言語を考察した.インターネット上の検索システムの多くは,ファジィマルチ集合を扱っているとみなすことができる.さらに,画像検索におけるファジィネスとラフ近似の利用についても成果を得た.この画像検索システムは,アイコンシソ-ラスと呼ばれるアイコン辞書を持ち,アイコンを索引と問い合わせに利用している.検索はファジィ情報検索の方法を用い,ラフ検索の可能性を示唆している.ただし,システム開発については時間などのリソースの制約があったため,プロトタイプ的なものにとどまった.
