自然破壊が憂慮されるようになってから久しいが、地域の風土・習慣をふまえた伝統的な工芸は、常に自然との融合をはかりながら製作形態が伝承されてきた。現在の自然を変革するという観点から、追求される教材に対し、自然を護るという観点から、工作・工芸の教材を考えようとするとき、地域の伝統工芸は、多くの示唆を与えるものと思う。埼玉県は、平野と共に山の多い県でもある。そこで、木工芸を中心にした教材を考えることにした。図画工作教育と木材の現状を知るために1) 東秩父村立東小学校で、図画の授業を見て、児童の作品をデジタルビデオカメラで記録した。2) 東秩父村立西小学校で、本校の施設・設備を見て、児童の図画・工作の作品をデジタル・ビデオカメラに記録した。校長の案内で、白岩分校と大内沢分校を見る。それぞれの分校の教諭に施設・設備を見せてもらい、分校の授業について聞いた。3) 和紙センター「和紙の里」で、和紙の製作過程を見て、関連する道具をデジタルビデオカメラで記録し、和紙に関する資料を収集する。4) 秩父農林振興センター、寄居林業事務所、飯能林業事務所から森林・林業に関する資料を取り寄せ、埼玉県の林業の状況を把握する。5) これまでの調査と資料をもとに、木を使った教材を3種類考案し、報告書を作成する。
