ゴリラのオスは基本的に、性成熟に達するころに出自群を移出して、メスを獲得するまでのあいだ単独生活を送る。追跡の難しい単独オスについて、群れや他の単独オスとどのような社会関係を築いているのか、これまでほとんど明らかにされてこなかった。本研究を通して、ニシローランドゴリラの単独オスと群れの社会関係を描き出し、マウンテンゴリラの社会との種間変異を探るのが最終的な目的である。平成27年度は、長期現地調査を中心とした研究活動に取り組んだ。平成27年7月から平成28年2月までの約7ヶ月間に渡り、ガボン共和国ムカラバ・ドゥドゥ国立公園に滞在して、ニシローランドゴリラの行動観察を行った。本国立公園には、2003年から人付けが開始されて調査が継続されてきたニシローランドゴリラの単雄複雌群（G群）が生息している。本年度はG群の行動観察に重点を置くことで、「群れの個体からみた他群や単独オスとの社会関係」を明らかにしようと試みた。具体的には、G群を追跡してGPSを用いてその遊動情報を記録するとともに、単独オスや他の群れとのエンカウンターに際した社会交渉や遊動の変化を調べた。また、群れを移出して単独オスとなる過程において遊動や社会関係がどのように変化するのか明らかにすることを目的として、G群に属する若いオスを観察し、群れ内外の他個体との社会交渉や個体間距離が年齢に応じてどのように異なるか調査した。若いオスのうち1個体は、群れと重複した遊動域で数ヶ月間に渡って単独で遊動したが、その後いったん群れに戻ってきて誇示行動などの社会交渉をしめした。この観察により、ニシローランドゴリラのオスの移出過程では、群れ内外の社会関係や遊動が段階的に変化することが示唆された。今後、これらの行動データについて詳細な分析を進めて、マウンテンゴリラとニシローランドゴリラにおける社会関係の違いとの関連を考察する。
