项目摘要

平成25年度は、11月の美術史学会例会での発表を主な目標とし、同年1月に提出した修士論文「谷口香嶠の歴史画と工芸」の内容を補強するため、各所への調査・見学へ赴いた。①香嶠が手掛けた図案集の調査…香嶠の手掛けた主要な図案集を入手し、詳細な情報を一覧化。機会が得られるのならば、「谷口香嶠と図案集出版(仮題)」として大正イマジュリィ学会研究会(7月開催)での発表を予定している。②香嶠の作品調査…当初予定していた作品四点の実見調査を実施。③美術史学会例会での研究発表…「谷口香嶠にみる絵画と工芸の交錯―美術染織品下絵・図案集を中心に」と題し発表を行った。以上の調査研究を通じて、楳嶺門下の四天王中で香嶠は特に歴史や工芸の知識が豊富で、四条派に立脚しながら、瀟洒な写生画よりも謹厳な大和絵や歴史画、仏画に関心を寄せていたことが明らかになった。また、明治21年の古社寺宝物調査での模写経験が香嶠の画業の方向性を決定付け、確かな知識に基づいた歴史画制作と「古代模様」の図案集出版が香嶠の活動の骨子となるが、香嶠は伝統に偏ることなく、海外需要に応じた美術染織品の下絵を手がけ、イタリアのアール・ヌーヴォー視察を行うなど、貪欲に西洋からも学び取り、新しい絵画・工芸の創出に苦心したとわかった。以上の研究結果により、伝統と革新の中で、絵画・工芸を行き来しながら、横断的な制作を行った香嶠の独自性と魅力を学会発表で示すことができ、当初の研究目的を達成することができた。また、当初の目的とは異なる方面では、香嶠と同じく京都で楳嶺門下の四天王と呼ばれた竹内栖鳳や、日本美術院の横山大観、下村観山、菱田春草など、香嶠と同世代の周辺画家との関係を探る中で、明治中期において岡倉天心に影響を受けた東西の青年画家たちによる東京画壇、京都画壇の形成や動向に興味深いトピックが発見された。特に、香嶠、観山、春草の制作に見られる明治30年代の仏教主題の流行などは、未だ深く考察がなされていないテーマであり、明治21年の宝物調査との観点から、今後さらに掘り下げる必要がある。なお、以上の研究結果をまとめて、学会誌『美術史』への投稿論文を現在執筆中である。
