项目摘要

本研究の目的は、エリザベス朝後期のイングランドで高まりを見せたイタリア文化・文学の受容ブームの全体像を明らかにすることである。本年度はトマス・ワトソンのペトラルカ風恋愛詩集Hekatompathia (1582) の分析を手掛かりに、1580年代におけるイタリア受容の状況を捉えることを目標に据えた。まず本作の後半部において描かれる、恋愛の神キューピッドへの糾弾とその死の場面がペトラルカの恋愛詩の系譜において極めて例外的なものであることに着目し、このモチーフの出処、そして意味合いを探るため、時代や地域を限らず文学作品や図像等の調査を行った。その結果、サー・フィリップ・シドニーのCertain Sonnetsの一編にワトソンと同じ「キューピッドの死」を描いた作品が存在することが判明した。この詩においてシドニーは、キューピッドの葬送のシーンをカトリック式の葬儀として描写しており、ワトソンがこのモチーフを踏襲して自身の詩集のクライマックスに位置づけたと捉えるならば、カトリックとの決別、そしてシドニーとの親密さをアピールしようとするねらいをそこに読み取ることができる。ワトソンがカトリックとの決別を髣髴とさせるこのような結末を選んだ背景には、自身のパトロンで当時カトリック信仰者として取り沙汰されていたオックスフォード伯の政敵であり、エリザベスの宮廷においてプロテスタント勢力の中核を成していたシドニー、そしてフランシス・ウォルシンガムとの関係をも深めようとするワトソンの意図が見え隠れする。20代後半という文人としてのキャリアの駆け出しの時期に執筆された本作は、ワトソンが職業詩人としての自らの立場を確固たるものにすべく出版した意欲的なイタリア受容の試みであったと結論づけられる。
