ようやくコロナ禍も落ち着き、少しずつ国内外での移動がしやすくなった。そこで、まず東京・横浜での史料・文献調査から始めた。特に、外交史料館で旅券下付の記録から、研究対象となる手紙と関係する人の移動の足跡をたどった。個別の聞き取り調査は、年度末になってようやく始めたのだが、それでも予定していた調査対象者全員に会うことはできなかった。その理由は、対象となる人達が高齢化しており、個人宅を訪れるのがまだまだ難しい現状があるからだ。10月には、那覇市を中心に6年ぶりに開催された沖縄のウチナーンチュ大会に参加した。そこで、3年ぶりに沖縄ニューカレドニア友好協会、沖縄の移民家族、VISAの緩和でようやく来日できたニューカレドニアからの参加者らと再会し、今後の活動について意見交換をすることができた。2月にはニューカレドニアに出張し、日本人移民130年を記念し、ニューカレドニア政府公文書館で「チオの日本人移民」という資料展示を企画実施した。連日、展示会場には旧知の研究者、新たな遺族や関係者、マスコミ、開設されたばかりの在ヌメア日本領事館事務所関係者など、いろいろな人々が来訪し、次年度の調査研究につながる意見交換ができた。展示会期は2月から7月という年度をまたぐ長い期間のため、今後も多くの来訪者が見込まれる。また、次年度客員研究員として滞在する予定のニューカレドニア大学で、多分野の研究者たちとの会議に参加し、自分の研究について発表した。今後何らかの共同研究もありうると思われる。国内では、手紙の宛先、差し出し先にあたる住所、あるいは移民の出身地、郷里でフィールド調査を、特に、熊本、福島で行った。特に、引き揚げてからの移民たちの生活環境を知りたいと思った。残念ながら、新たな手紙の発見には至らなかったが、次年度に向けての下準備となる成果があった。
