本研究は東南アジア地域における文化の商品化という問題を、特に観光の場におけるエスニック・ツーリズムやエスニック・アート、観光土産を事例とすることにより、実証的に研究することを目的としている。特に多民族国家マレーシアを調査地として選択し、その中でもUNESCO世界文化遺産として認定され、歴史的な都市景観や生活様式が観光資源となっているペナンと、熱帯雨林に代表される自然環境が管区資源とされるエコツーリズムおよび現地の少数民族の地域的な生活文化が観光資源とされるエスニックツーリズムが盛んなサラワク州を具体的な調査地として選択する。これらの地域はヨーロッパや東アジア、イスラーム圏、近隣の東南アジア諸国といった外部社会からの政治経済的かつ社会文化的な影響を受けた独特の歴史的・文化的背景が観光資源になるペナンと、熱帯雨林の中で生活する少数民族の独特のエキゾチックな文化を観光資源とするサラワクという点で相違点がある。従来の観光社会学的・観光人類学的な研究は、このような観光地の文化をホストとゲストの相互交渉による新たな文化の創造や演出、文化の混交といった観点から分析してきた。だが実際にはこれらの地域を訪問するゲストにはドメスティックなゲストや外部者界出身のゲスト、さらにはドメスティックなゲストの中にも多民族社会特有の多様性が存在する。本研究はこのような「ゲストの多様性」が特定の観光地に反映される現状を明らかにした。
