古代懐疑主義には、一切の主張を行わない特徴によってスケプティコイ（懐疑派・探究派）を自称し始めた前1世紀以後のピュロン主義と、知識不可能（アカタレープシアー）を主張したアカデメイア派（前3世紀-前1世紀）の二つの立場が含まれる。二つの立場を、全面的エポケー（判断保留・信念放棄）の有無によってそれぞれ徹底的懐疑主義、緩和された懐疑主義と特徴づけるヒュームの整理は現在も用いられる。本研究は古代懐疑主義のこうした特徴づけを、そこに介入しているかもしれない近代的前提を相対化しつつ再検討する基本方針のもとで、2022年度は（1）アカデメイア派における緩和された立場、（2）ピュロン主義における日常的信念に関する二つの論点に取り組んだ。（1）信念形成に関する過信と不信のいずれにも陥らない適度な疑いを可能にする緩和された懐疑主義としてアカデメイア派の懐疑主義を評価したヒュームの影響は現在でも続いている。本研究は（i）「知識不可能だが行為可能である」という主張を基調とするアカデメイア派の歴史のなかで、ヒュームのアカデメイア派懐疑主義の理解に強く影響を与えているキケロの立場がもつ意味を論じた。（2）ピュロン主義は全面的エポケーを特徴とする徹底的懐疑主義の一種であり、それとは別種の徹底的懐疑主義であるデカルトの方法的懐疑と、次の二点でしばしば対照される。ピュロン主義において、心に対して外的な世界を含む事物の存在は疑われることはない（特徴a）。また全面的エポケーが行為と分離して遂行されることもない（特徴b）。本研究は、ピュロン主義が則る先行思想（経験派医学、およびエピクロス派の感覚知覚理論）の枠組みが特徴a・bをもたらしていることを示し、それによって、ピュロン主義の現れ（パイノメナ）が認識的性質をもつか（それゆえ「日常的信念」をもつか）否かをめぐる解釈上の争点について新たな示唆を与えた。

(2) A thorough skepticism, a thorough skepticism, and a thorough skepticism. The existence of things is doubtful (characteristic a). A complete separation of actions (characteristic b). This study focuses on the characteristics a·b of the pre-thought of the doctrine of cognition (the theory of medicine and sense-knowledge of the school of medicine) and the nature of cognition (the daily belief).
