Sevoflurane and isoflurane are newly developed volatile anesthetics. We studied on the stability of these anesthetics with sodalime and an extent of their biotransformation.1. Isoflurane, sevoflurane, halothane, methoxyflurane, and enflurane were stable under ultra-violet-ray exposure for two years.2. Trifluoroacetic acid was detected in the bile of rabbits and rats during and after inhalation of halothane by ionchromatography. Unlike <CF_2> CHCl and <CF_3> <CH_2> Cl, anearobic metabolites of halothane, the excretion of trifluoroacetic acid remained unchanged at each concentration of halothane.3. Trifluoroacetic acid was detected in the bile of rabbits during and after inhalation of isoflurane by ionchromatography. The excretion of trifluoroacetic acid increased dose dependently.4. The inorganic fluoride increased dose relatedly and approximately im mol was excreted after 1 MAC x hour inhalation of isoflurane.5. The half-lives of inorganic and organic fluoride as metabolites of isoflurane in man was calculated to be 29 and 39 hours, respectivery.6. The half-life of inorganic fluoride as metabolites of sevoflurane in man was calculated to be 34 hours.7. Sevoflurane reacted with sodalime to produce 5 degraded products. These products were a dehydrofluorinated sevoflurane, its methylated product and 3 kinds of dehydrofluorinated products of the methylated product.
