本研究の内容は、都市の緑の現況把握と、住民と緑の関係とに二分できる。現況の把握においては質的な面を重視し、植物の種の構成等についての調査と分析を進めた。街路樹の樹種については気候により地域的な差が生じる他、都心部と周辺部においても樹種の構成にかなりの差があった。近年常緑樹増えつつある実態なども把握された。 保存樹についても樹種等が調べられたが、街路樹とはかなり異なり、常緑広葉樹、針葉樹なども多く指定されていた。保存樹に指定されている樹木の樹高、幹周、樹齢、本数等も都市によりかなりの差異がみられた。樹林を構成する樹木については、小石川後楽園を調査対象地として5年前の調査結果と合わせることにより、樹種の消長、成長量等を分析し、都市の樹林の動態の一端を把握した。川崎市を対象地として、土地要因と樹木の活力度の関係も調査した。住民意識と緑の関係については、模型を作成した上でモデルスコープを用いて画像を取り、視覚心理的な実験に供試するという技術を開発した。この手法を用いて、街路樹の植栽間隔等に対する評価を調べた。植栽間隔が狭まり、緑視量が増えるに従って評価値は高まってくるが、ある程度以上になると緑が多ければ多いほど良いとする人々と、うっとうしさを感じて評価値を下げる人々に二分されるという傾向がみられた。またブロック塀の生け垣化に関連した住民の考えをアンケートし、ブロック塀、生け垣の所有者および、ブロック塀から生け垣に改変した人々の緑に関する政策等に対する考え方の差異を調べ、さらにMSA拡張分析という手法による解析を行い、各項目の関連を図化した。別のアンケートにより、地域と世代による緑との接し方の変化についても調査した。都市の緑を保全する手法の一つとして、ナショナル・トラストを都市域に拡大していく方法についても社会的な諸条件の分析から検討した。
