本研究は各種の攪乱を受けて急速に荒癈しつつあるわが国のさんご礁生態系の保護管理に役立てるため、既存の、又はさんご礁海域外における調査研究の成果を整理考察して、英文の総説論文にまとめることを目的とした。完成した論文集には下記の内容の論文が集録されている。沖縄南西部八重山群島におけるさんご礁魚類資源の管理 八重山におけるさんご礁漁業は、漁業法と集落ごとの伝統的慣習にもとづく規則によって運用され、前者は全体的枠組みを規定し、後者は日常的運営や漁業者の規範を規定する。両者の中間に八重山漁業組合が位置する。ラドルさんご礁海域水の化学成分の挙動-さんご礁海域における化学環境の監視さんご礁海域の化学環境に関する十分な研究資料はないが、ある点で類似する河口域水についてはかなりの研究成果の蓄積があるので、そのさんご礁海域えの適用について検討した。北野造礁サンゴに及ぼす無機粒子の堆積と懸濁の影響 このことに関する野外や実験室における研究成果をまとめて、サンゴは無機粒子の懸濁にはかなり耐性が高いことがわかった。山里南西日本におけるオニヒトデ集団の消長と海況の関係 オニヒトデの幼生は2〜4週間浮游生活をするので、その間に琉球列島から四国・本州の太平洋岸に運ばれた幼生により一時的集団が形成される。伊豆半島では水温が低いためオニヒトデは出現しない。紀伊半島先端と三宅島では、黒潮流路の変動に伴ってオニヒトデの集団が出現したりしなかったりする。四国南の集団はそれ以南の場合と同様に自己再生産を行っているようである。山口さんご礁生物群集の攪乱 沖縄における広範囲にわたるサーベイは少いが、既存の調査研究を総合すると、1969年-1976年ごろにオニヒトデ食害が終り、在は恢服期にある。西平
