昨年度に, 沖縄県久米島具志川村所在の下地原洞穴で,更新世の化石包含層を発掘調査し,ヒト乳児骨および多数のシカ類をはじめとする動物骨の化石を追加採集した. 本年度は引きつづきこれらの化石資料の整理,同定を進めるとともに,再度現地調査を実施して,遺跡の立地条件,地質,形状等の性格を明らかにした.1.現地調査研究代表者,分担者の2名は現地研究者,沖縄県および具志川村教育委員会の協力のもとに,昭和62年12月下旬に約3日間の現地調査を実施した. 調査は下地原洞内および周辺の地形の測量と立地条件の確認を目的として行われ,とくに洞内の化石包含層の年代と層序の確認に重点を置いた.2.化石資料の研究昨年度に得られた化石の分類・同定を進めた結果,さらに新らしい知見が得られ,次の分類群および種を含むことが明らかになった.(1)ヒト. 5点. 既発見の乳児骨と同一個体と推定される四股骨,肋骨等.(2)偶蹄目. リュウキュウジカ約100点,リュウキュウムカシキョン5点.(3)食虫目. トガリネズミ科オナガジネズミ2点.(4)翼手目. コキクガシラコオモリ91点,ユビナガコオモリ17点.(5)ゲッ歯目. オキナワハツカネズミ,トゲネズミ,ケナガネズミ計60点.(6)スズメ目. カケス属,トラツグミ,ヒヨドリ,コマドリ属,カラス属各1〜2点.(7)その他. 非スズメ目の鳥,ヘビ類,甲殻類が若干存在する.なお,(3)〜(5)の小型哺乳類の同定された種はすべて現生種であるが,久米鳥で最初の報告であり,化石のオナガジネズミ,ユビナガコオモリ,オキナワハツカネズミは本邦初出記録である.
