本研究は、徳禪寺文書を素材として、(1)近年所々で発見の続いている襖内文書についての古文書学的研究と、(2)原本の精査において赤外線ビデオを利用する方法の開発を目指し、(3)直接には、この文書を接続・復元して文書目録を作成することを課題としていた。第一の襖内文書の古文書学については、(1)昭和61年度の襖絵修補にともなう撮影・調査において発見された中世文書の上に断片が付着していること、また既修補分の文書の復元作業においても襖内部で何度かにわたる破壊をうけた痕跡を確認したことなどによって、襖内文書(特に蓑張)は何次にもわたる破壊と再利用を経ている可能性があることを明らかにし、(2)その本来の姿を復元するためには、襖仕立の際に準備される巻紙の全体を復元することが先決であり、蓑の場合と骨の場合の両者についてその復元の諸方法を試みた。また襖内文書は近世文書であることが多いが、史料編纂所所蔵の妙心寺大通院襖内文書は中世文書であり、これについても調査を行い、上記の方式の有効性を確認した。これらについては、文化財保護の観点からも重要であることを京都府の担当者との間で確認したので、すぐに公開の可能な右の大通院文書を素材とした報告を行う予定である。第二の原本の精査については、原本の東京への借用が実現できたことにより、紙質・筆跡・内容などによって接続の復元作業を進めることができた。特に赤外線ビデオによる文書調査は、煤などによる汚損,裏打のある裏書,貼紙・白抹の下の字などについて有効性があることを確認した。今後、照明の方式,フィルターなどについて工夫を進める予定である。第三の文書目録の作成については、コンピューターのワークシートを作成中であり、早急に仕上げたい。作業過程において、本文書が、大徳寺本坊・真珠庵に流入した徳禪寺文書の残りで、その中でも証文的な価値が低いと考えられたものであることが判明した。
