大徳寺文書の中で眞珠奄文書について材質分析研究を行った。古文書の透過度写真、色度計、光沢度などを分析して、紙の添加剤や抄紙技術について調べた。このような研究は様々な中世時代の紙の種類を確立するためである。特に美濃紙の場合は非繊維物質がよく見え、材質はパリパリして他の紙より黄色い特徴を持っていることが分かった。繊維以外の不純物が多く、リグニンが残存するためだと推定できる。中世和紙の大部分を占めるゴウゾ紙の物理的な大分類は材質分析の観点からは繭紙(ほぼ完全に洗浄漂白しこうぞ繊維からなる純紙)、強紙、黄紙類、澱粉紙(澱粉を添加した紙類)などで区別できた。簀の目数10、15及び25本/寸の簀を用いて漉いた和紙を使い、フラットベッドスキャナーで取り込んだ透過光画像及び目視での簀の目の見え方を検討した。簀の目が見える要素と考えられる繊維量の局所的な変動を調べるために、ベータ線地合測定装置(Beta Formation Tester、Amberteck社、SWEDEN)を用いた面内坪量分布及びソフトX線装置(PRO-TEST 150、SOFTEX社製)を使った面内坪量分布の測定を行った。表面形状画像からは、ミツマタ10本/寸では、凹凸の変動が約3mmの間隔となっており、簀の目は凹凸としても現れていることがわかった。抄紙時に簀に当たっていた面の凸部は乾燥時に板に張り付けられる面になるため、反対側に押し上げられることがわかった。繊維配向観察の結果を示す。2枚の光学顕微鏡画像は、ガンピ20本/寸の同一の紙表面に対し、画像からそれぞれ照明して撮影した。左右方向に配向する繊維が強調される。簀の目のラインと直交する方向に繊維が多数並んでおり、流し漉きの典型的繊維配向を示す。

Two optical micromirrors illuminate the same paper surface at 20 pixels per inch. The left and right directions are aligned so that the dimension is emphasized. Most of the dimensions in the direction of the eye and the orthogonal direction are parallel to each other, and the typical dimension orientation of the flow is shown.
