项目摘要

本研究は、ヨーロッパ中世における歴史叙述と歴史意識について、検討・考察したものである。年代記,聖者伝,神学著作を史料として用いた。初期中世の歴史叙述は、ゲルマン民族のアイデンティティーとその歴史的使命を確認することを目指したもので、イングランドのヴェーダの教会史はその編年史的民族史と西洋キリスト教との交錯点であった。西欧の歴史叙述の最盛期ともいえるのが12世紀であり、イデオロギー論争としての叙任権闘争,東方の発見をもたらした十字軍,という刺激の中で、12世紀に固有の性格と複雑にからみあった発展的歴史観が誕生した。オットー・フォン・フライジンクの「世界年代記」は、空間的概念を含む、一種の「世界地図(マッパ・ムンディ)」として救済史的プログラムの中に構想された。また、オルデリクス・ヴィタリスは、英仏の混血という特異な出生をもち、ノルマン・コンクェストと、その後のスティーヴン治世期の混乱の中で、全キリスト教世界の総合的な歴史像を構築することをめざしたのである。しかしながら、13世紀以後、発展的歴史観と、それにもとづく歴史叙述は「発展」を無意味化するヨアキム主義と、諸学の大全の登場により、百科全書的歴史叙述に取って替わられることとなる。中世における歴史は、七自由学芸の三学(文法・修辞学・弁証法)に従属するものと考えられ、大学で教えられる学問に昇格したのは、イタリア・ルネサンス期に入ってからにすぎない。しかしながら中世人自身の自己理解・心性の中で歴史は、彼らの世界観と深くかかわっていた。というのも、彼らにとって世界は、本質的に歴史的なもの、すなわち救済史にかかわるものであったからである。以上が本研究の結論の要旨である。
