数理物理系によくあらわれる偏微分方程式の数値解を求める有力な手法としての有限要素法は、数理科学の分野では現在最も多く利用されている。しかし、非線形問題に対しては十分統一的な体系ができあがっていない。そのため今回の研究では、特に非線形境界条件を伴った放射冷却問題を中心テーマとしてとりあげて、有限要素近似におけるアルゴリズムの開発、誤差評価収束性など数値解析上の問題点を明らかにした。さらに関数解析、微分方程式論、作用素論などの結果を応用して数値解の数学的構造や性質について明らかにした。同時に大型電子計算機による数値実験も行ない理論の有効性を示した。次に個々の研究成果を列挙する。1.有限要素解が正則な鋭角型の三角形分割の下で真の解に一様収束する。2.非線形方程式を解くために、上と下から収束する単調陽型反復法を提案し、そのアルゴリズムが収束することを証明した。3.勾配平均化にもとずいて最適収束率を通常知られているオーダーより1だけ上まわる優収束する解も構成できた。4.非保存力学系の力学的対称性に注目すれば保存則も得られて、場の理論においても例証できた。5.ヒルベルト空間上の縮小作用素がバナッハ空間に拡張されて平均エルゴード定理も得られた。6.内積空間における中線定理がより一般化できることも示した。7.局所有限な微分作用素での不変となる条件をリー代数によって求めた。今後はさらに、差分法,ガレルキン法,有限要素法などの近似解法の長所や短所を精密に評価する数学的基準を求めて数値解析上の問題点を明らかにしていきたい。あわせてコンピューターによる数値実験も行ない理論と実際との統一を考えていきたい。
