The scientific focus of the applicant's group is the study of the function as well as the electronic and dynamic properties of iron centers in nature (iron proteins) and coordination chemistry (biomimetic iron complexes, spincrossover compounds and molecular magnets) by Mössbauer spectroscopy. For the identification of especially complex polynuclear iron centers in biological systems such as heme, non-heme, and iron-sulfur proteins, Mössbauer spectroscopy in high magnetic fields is one of the most suitable methods. Mössbauer spectroscopy in high magnetic fields also plays an important role in determining electronic and magnetic properties of iron centers. This special type of Mössbauer spectroscopy is operated in the applicant's research group at the TU Kaiserslautern thanks to a Mössbauer spectrometer with high-field cryostat approved in April 2005. After the procurement phase of a closed-cycle He cryostat equipped with a superconducting coil and a corresponding set-up phase, Mössbauer spectroscopic experiments could thus be performed since 2008. After 14 years of successful operation, the facility has exceeded its life time. The purpose of this application is to be able to continue Mössbauer spectroscopy in high magnetic fields at the TU Kaiserslautern in the future within the framework of a replacement procurement.
