本調査研究は, 国立民族学博物館のアフリカ部門が昭和52年以来, 海外学術調査及び共同研究会等を通し, 蓄積を企ててきた「アフリカ諸民族の物質文化の民族学的研究」の成果をふまえ, さらに新しい展開をはかろうと計画された. 新しい展開の目標は, 従来から社会, 文化, 歴史をそれぞれに顕著な相違が指摘されていた東部アフリカと中・西部アフリカを比較の視野に入れて対象地域を設定し, 独立後20年たったアフリカ諸国の民族文化の変容過程を明らかにすることを目的とした.東部アフリカ:主要調査国であるタンザニアでは総論的にいえば, 社会主義農業政策の修正により, 部族を主体にした各地方独自の近代的な経済活動が始まっている. まず, 北部地方のハナン山麓イラク族ではウジヤマー村が改組され, 自主的農業組合が復活し, 農業生産性はかなりな向上性を示しているが反面ナイル系バラバイガ族は放牧地を失い, 牧畜業は著しく後退した. ついで南部地方のトゥクュ丘陵ニャキュウサ族では, 市場活動が活発になり, 都市と農村が経済的により緊密に結合し, 栽培作物は質量ともに豊富になっているが, 土地不足は深刻で各農家の牛飼養頭数は減少しつつあり婚資の額も低下した. このように独立後20数年を経過した東アフリカでは, 牛牧文化複合は衰微して農耕文化の比重が高くなりつつある.中・西部アフリカ:主要調査国のカメルーンでは総論的にいえば交通通信設備の拡大により部族間交流が盛んになり, 国民文化の普遍化が急速に進行している. 北部ではベヌエ川中流域に多目的ダムが完成, 広大な可耕地と放牧地が確保され, 大規膜な人口移動が起こり, 新しい部族混住の社会が出現している. その結果, 牧畜フルベの間にも農耕化が進展している. 南部では, バムン王権の伝統組織が大都市へ移住した臣下にもネット・ワークを拡大して, 近代社会に新しい政治性を持ちつつある. 伝統的なヤシ酒儀礼が都市でも行われ, 経済的には互助組織の基礎になっている. 総じて国全体の電力開発が進み, 地方都市にも電気が供給され, 家庭電化製品の普及が目ざましく, 生活と文化のパターンに大幅な変化がみられる. マスコミを通しての政府公報が国民文化の形成に大きな影響をあたえている.
