東北地方においてイタコ、カミサマ、ゴミソなどと呼ばれる民間巫者を介して施行されている冥婚習俗の実態調査を行なった。まず金木町川倉地蔵堂、木造町弘法寺では、夭折した不幸な男女を供養する目的で、1955年頃から死霊結婚を具象する花嫁花婿人形の奉納が始まり、1970年代後半からその数が急増していることが判明した。これは、一般に言われているように冥界結婚が日本列島から消滅したのではなく、東北地方の一部では、むしろ新しい習俗として蘇生したことを意味している。おそらく、巫者の口寄せが人形製作者の商業主義とむすびついたと推察されるが、中牧弘允(民博助教授)の指摘するとおり、東北地方における深刻な農村の嫁不足に対応して、こうした冥婚習俗の施行が盛んになったと解釈されるのである。同様に、山形県山寺立石寺でも掲額されている死後結婚の絵、写真、肖像画、肖像写真は、現代風俗に合せた花嫁花婿人形に変りつつある。また、天童市鈴立山若松寺では、死者の彼岸での幸福な結婚を祈願して、婚礼場面を描いた絵馬が奉納されている。この種の絵馬は、この地方では「むかさり絵馬」と呼ばれ、古い風習として存続していた、「むかさり絵馬」の奉納者は山形県北部と宮城県の在住者が圧倒的に多いが、東京方面から奉納された絵馬も散見され、裾野の広いことが分る。通常、冥界結婚は民間巫者の口寄せ、すなわち、死者の結婚したいという烈しく切ない声を伝えることによって親兄弟等が死霊の怨念を除去するために施行されるが、最近では、病や事故で早世した未婚の子どもを不憫におもう親心から自主的に行なう事例が多くなってきた。東北地方の冥婚習俗はまだ調査を開始したばかりで、資料の整理も不十分であるが、民間巫者によって奉納物に変化があらわれても決して消滅しないものと考えられる。
